How KC Stacks Up →
A surprisingly interesting article from the local paper that outlines where we stack up on a number of city lists. Some of these don’t make any sense (manliest?) but some others are dead on. Best BBQ in the nation? Yup. 12th Smartest? Sure. 2nd best in driving ability? Definitely. One of the best Downtowns? Far from it. The Kaufmann center is beautiful, but it doesn’t overcome the fact that downtown is populated by bankers and lawyers during the day and … Continue reading
The American Royal Texas Hold ‘em Tournament →
A couple of friends of mine and I started this little event (apparently) 7 years ago and it continues to get bigger every year. We’ve raised over $50,000 for college scholarships and it’s one of my favorite events of the year. The American Royal is the biggest party of the year in Kansas City, and this year it seems that I’ve been asked to be a judge for the party of the year contest. I’m already accepting bribes.
Hackerspaces – The Book →
Bre Pettis writing at the hackerspaces.org blog. We did this because we wanted it to exist and so it is a reward in itself. If you feel moved and want to support hackerspaces, we suggest contributing to the Wau Holland fund which helps make awesome things happen for hackerspaces. We would also like to thank everyone who submitted photographs and writing, this is your book. I’m really excited about flipping through this. Starting CCCKC was an amazing experience. In related … Continue reading
Dan Kaminsky Proves What You Already Suspected →
I know this is going to sound strange — I’m really not out to bust anyone with N00ter. Yes, I know it’s inevitable. But if a noxious filter is quietly removed with the knowledge that it’s presence is going to be provable in a court of law, well, all’s well that ends well, right? I caught Dan’s talk courtesy of DCTV this year and it was, as always, pretty darn interesting. N00ter promises to confirm what a lot of us … Continue reading
CCCKC 2011 Awards! →
Speaking of CCCKC.. Craig Berscheidt and Michael Curry are our Makers of the Year: Craig Berscheidt’s has worked very hard this year to get the CCCKC CNC up and running. And he dedicated much of his time, equipment and know-how to the 3D Printer community within CCCKC. Michael Curry has been an outstanding representative of our hacker space and the hacker space and 3D printer movements across the nation. His work has appeared several times in well known maker/hacker blogs/sites … Continue reading
What a Year (and a Half) It’s Been
Just a little over a year ago, a group of men crammed themselves into the upstairs room of a local coffee shop and created something amazing. One year ago CCCKC had no bank account, no dedicated space and no paying members. What we had then, and still enjoy, was an amazing group of visionaries dedicated to building a space to showcase the talented minds of Kansas City. The idea to build a hacker space in Kansas City started in the … Continue reading
The Cowtown Computer Congress – A Kansas City Hackerspace
It’s my distinct pleasure to reveal my newest project, the Cowtown Computer Congress (CCCKC). This idea has been floating around in my mind for quite some time and circumstances have emerged which will help make this a reality. Background Kansas City and the midwest in general doesn’t have the greatest reputation for being a center of technology. This is rather absurd considering the number of technology related companies and projects which are based in the area such as … Continue reading
